CBS announces Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone starts production
A video released today by CBS All Access marks the start of production on Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone reboot.
October 2nd marks the day in 1959 that Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone first premiered on CBS and appropriately marks the day in 2018 on which production of the new series is announced by the same network.
Social visionary Jordan Peele steps into Rod Serling’s shoes as the host and producer for a new era of futuristic allegories and satires. CBS announced the start of production with a video compiling some of the original series most iconic moments and preparing viewers for the upcoming revival to be aired on CBS All Access.
If we’re honest, the actual subject matter probably won’t have changed that much between 1959 and today, just the way in which it’s presented and the dynamics of the issues. After all, the original series is, more often than not, just as affecting and vital as it ever was. The only difference might be that there will hopefully be more episodes about women’s rights, the modern movement against sexual assault, and racial and religious persecution.
Peele is the perfect voice to present these new stories as he is clearly interested in the “socially conscious storytelling” style of the series. He also has an intelligent and insightful understanding of the social challenges facing the world today and is adept at presenting the complexities of those issues from a unique and penetrating perspective.
Get Out was basically a full-length Twilight Zone episode, using the horror genre to convey the social challenges and prejudice encountered by the African American community and how white people, knowingly or unknowingly, perpetuate that racist system. It will be interesting to see what he does with The Twilight Zone format and what genres could be utilized.
The Twilight Zone is set to premiere on CBS All Access in 2019, but no more specific timeframe is yet known.
