New castings have been announced as Season 5 of Peaky Blinders nears.

New casting news from Deadline has been released for Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, two of the names being Sam Claflin and Brian Gleeson. The two actors join Anya Taylor-Joy as new additions to BBC’s hit crime drama.

While their roles have yet to be revealed, one can wonder if one or both actors will end up opposing Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders (there’s currently a void for an adversary at the moment).

Season 5’s plot will involve the financial crash of 1929  in Birmingham and looks to be dealing a lot more with politics now that Tommy is an MP. According to Knight,

"“The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain and Europe as the 1920s end and the 30s begin. Tommy Shelby faces the darkest force he has ever faced and his struggle is as relevant today as it was then.”"

Darkest force yet, huh? Just when it looked like Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) and his Italian American mafia would never be topped, Knight hits us with this major tease. Will Claflin and/or Gleeson step up to fill this role?

Some of Sam Claflin’s most popular works are Adrift and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Brian Gleeson has starred in recent works Phantom Thread and Logan Lucky.

Also joining Season 5 in unannounced roles are Kate Dickie (The Witch), Neil Maskell (In Darkness), Elliot Cowan (The Spanish Princess), Andrew Koji (Warrior),  Emmett J Scanlan (Safe), Cosmo Jarvis (Calm With Horses), and Daryl McCormack (A Very English Scandal).

Next. By the order of Peaky Blinders: two more season confirmed?. dark

They’ll be joining returning main cast members Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, and Paul Anderson, among many others.

New characters don’t typically last very long as past track records have shown. If you’re not a Shelby or affiliated with the Peaky Blinders, you’re expendable. We’ll see what parts these characters play as Peaky Blinders returns in 2019. Catch it on BBC One and/or Netflix
