Henry Cavill looks intense as Geralt in first look at Netflix’s The Witcher

Superman has traded in his red cape for the long grey hair of Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist of the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Witcher.

But don’t worry, Henry Cavill still looks like he can save the world.

Released on various social media channels, including Cavill’s Instagram and Netflix’s Twitter, a short video shows Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia emerging from the darkness, walking up to the camera and taking an intense swig of a drink.

Now, while this short glimpse is from a costume and makeup camera test, there’s still at least one thing to notice (aside from how natural long hair looks on Cavill). The left side of Cavill’s face is in shadow, obscuring the characteristic scar on the left side of Geralt’s face (or perhaps hiding the lack thereof).

The release of the first images of Cavill in costume comes as production is underway in Hungary for the upcoming fantasy series.

The Witcher, originally a series of short stories and novels by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, follows the witcher Geralt of Rivia.

Witchers are monster hunters who gain supernatural abilities in order to fight beasts. The series has been translated into more than a dozen languages and adapted into comic books, games and a previous film and tv show (The Hexer).

Netflix also announced additional casting, including Twin Peaks’ Eamon Farren, Knightfall‘s Joey Batey, Sherlock’s Lars Mikkelsen and Harry Potter’s Anna Shaffer.

While it’s still too soon to tell what the rest of showrunner and executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s world will look like, one thing is certain: Cavill continues to look unbelievably intimidating and seems ready to take on absolutely any beast.
