House of Cards season 6, episode 4 recap: Chapter 69

An entire episode in (almost one location) proves to be very telling when secrets are spilled all over the place on House of Cards.

House of Cards Spoiler alert: Cathy Durant is still alive – proving that when a character dies on a television show, don’t believe he or she is really dead until you see the body. And at the end of “Chapter 69”, we see Cathy’s body walking around, talking on a cell phone.

Knowing this, it makes watching an entire episode that takes place at her funeral seem insignificant. And even though we got a break from the Shepherds this episode, it doesn’t mean they don’t know what’s going on, since Seth is reporting back to them with the play-by-play.

Congressman Cole, whom Doug is currently working for, attends Cathy’s funeral, mostly to show his face and schmooze so he can become Speaker of the House. Claire points out that Doug could make his way back to the White House if Cole becomes President. Now, who’s schmoozing who?

But then Doug is issued some stressful news from Linda Vasquez (Sakina Jaffrey). He will be subpoenaed by the USAG. Then, she tells Claire that she wishes she never gave Frank the Secretary of State job because “this could all have been avoided.” Oh, Linda. Sweet, dumb Linda. Watch out; you might be next on the hit list!

Another interesting “mourner” at the funeral is President Petrov of Russia. Claire invited him because this woman loves drama. But really, it’s all about Syria. Petrov doesn’t care if there’s a war there, but Claire and Jane are trying to avoid it.

Claire and Petrov meet privately in her bedroom. Are they going to do it? They discuss the terms. Basically, he can have anything he wants if he agrees that nothing from Shepherd Unlimited enter into Syria. Shortly after, Petrov, quite literally, runs into Jane. Are they going to do it? Their banter back and forth is laced with hate sexual tension, and I would not hate if they did do it. But they don’t. Is anyone going to do it with Petrov?

The Russian leader accepts the deal. Claire adds one last term, “Tom Yates. Your government was behind whatever happened to him.”

You see, Claire knows it may come out that she was behind Tom’s murder. There is also a rumor going around that he was having an affair with someone in the White House – the new Press Secretary Kelsey. Someone is using Tom’s credit cards near Prague, so, by Russia taking responsibility for the murder, her hands are clean.

Elsewhere, Seth drops a bomb on Doug, that Frank’s will left Doug more than just his cufflinks. Doug doesn’t seem too pleased by this news.

And the only scene not at Cathy’s fake funeral, Tom and Janine drive around talking about life and the Herald and the whether or not Tom will ever be able to let the Underwoods go. The answer is no; he won’t. Janine throws back by mentioning Rachel Posner (Rachel Brosnahan). Will Doug get away with her murder or has he already?

And seriously, what is up with Cathy still being alive and what tricks does she have up her sleeve?
