The 1994 film Four Weddings and a Funeral has inspired a Hulu limited series of the same name, and Andie MacDowell, one the of the movie’s leads, will guest star.

MacDowell will play a new character, according to Deadline, in the Four Weddings and a Funeral series, which is being written and executive produced by Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton.

In other casting news for the project, Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) has been cast in the lead, replacing Jessica Williams who was originally slated to play the role.

In addition, Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re the Worst), Zoe Boyle (Downton Abbey), Jennie Jacques (Vikings), Harish Patel (Run, Fatboy, Run), and Guz Khan (Borderline) have all joined the cast. It was already announced that Nikesh Patel, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and John Reynolds will appear on the series.

Filming is starting now with an eye towards a 2019 premiere.

The series version of Four Weddings and a Funeral centers on four American friends who re-connect in London at a wedding. However, the friends — Maya (Emmanuel), Craig (Smith), Ainsley (Rittenhouse), and Duffy (Reynolds) — find their lives turned upside down after a bombshell is dropped at the altar. They spend the next year going through romantic and political turmoil. And through the course of the series, there will be… four weddings and a funeral.

MacDowell will play Ainsley’s mother, Mrs. Howard. While the show will tell a different story than the movie, MacDowell’s involvement maintains the show’s connection to the film in which MacDowell and Hugh Grant starred.

Hulu rescued Kaling’s The Mindy Project after it was canceled by Fox after 3 seasons. It spent an additional three seasons on the streamer, ending after season 6. That show was also a romantic comedy and Kaling seemed well-versed in the genre’s tropes and classic films, so she may be the perfect person to bring a series based the fondly remembered Four Weddings and a Funeral to the small screen.

It remains to be seen how Hulu subscribers will react to the series, however. So far, Hulu’s most noteworthy original series, including The Handmaid’s Tale and Castle Rock, have skewed much darker and edgier. However, if Four Weddings and a Funeral does well, Hulu could see it as an opportunity to expand the breadth of their original offerings further.
