The Gifted deals with the collateral damage from the previous episode.

This week’s episode opens up with a flashback to happier times between Lorna and Marcos. They’re in bed and gleeful about Lorna’s pregnancy with Marcos talking to Dawn in the womb. She comforts him about his worries of following in his father’s footsteps. Marcos takes the opportunity to try and open a discussion about Lorna’s birth dad but she immediately shuts him down. Will The Gifted ever outright say Magneto’s name? Probably not, but it’s still exciting to even hear him alluded to.

Fond memories will have to wait though since Lorna is driving the escape car away from the carnage at the bank. She’s understandably furious at Rebecca’s actions and isn’t willing to chalk it up to an honest mistake like Andy. Speaking of Andy, it isn’t clear whether he wants to forgive her because she’s his girlfriend or because he’s afraid of her. Nevertheless, Rebecca understands she’s not wanted and escapes the car before either one can talk her out of it.

Lorna doesn’t really care that Rebecca left, in fact, she would be happier if the girl never returned. However, Reeva isn’t about to let a loose end like Rebecca continue running around, especially since she murdered her boyfriend. Esme is confident they’ll find her, even if Sage isn’t, but Lorna angrily announces her fear for Dawn’s safety. Andy is worried about what will happen to Rebecca if she’s found, but Lorna points out the destruction happening in the world is entirely Rebecca’s fault.

It’s true, the world is literally set ablaze with anti-mutant protestors attacking people in the street.   Esme can’t assure Lorna that Dawn is safe there, which is way later into “the dreaM,” she finds a boarding school in Switzerland which houses mutants. Considering the protestors burn down a foster home for mutants, including the children, Lorna decides this might be for the best.

Probably one of the best scenes from The Gifted this season, Marcos finally calls out Lorna on her actions. She chose to work with the Inner Circle, fully knowing their plan involved Rebecca, a woman with a penchant for violence. It wasn’t like she joined a book club, she began assisting an organization she used to despise. Now that Dawn is pulled into the crosshairs, she acts as though her actions were not responsible for the current protests. We love Lorna, but Marcos is definitely in the right here. But it’s heartbreaking to hear her admit she’d rather Dawn grow up hating her than never growing up at all. To top that, Marcos asks how he’s supposed to say goodbye to the daughter he’s only met once.

At least things are finally looking up for Reed, who meets the mysterious Madeline. She was his father’s research partner and now she specializes in helping mutants control their powers. On the surface, her organization looks completely safe but we still get a bad vibe from her. In the comics, Matthew Risman is one of the leaders of the Purifiers. Turns out The Gifted is keeping the same storyline but Madeline wants to offer them the opportunity to suppress their gene forever.

Lauren is immediately smitten with the new university lab and the student running tests on her. “the dreaM” seems to be named for her since she gets a look at what her life could be like. If her dad is cured, then Lauren could return to school where mutants are accepted. Madeline informs Reed that he needs to stick around for treatment or he’ll eventually die. It doesn’t initially seem like a bad deal for Lauren until she finds out Madeline’s real plans.

Throughout this episode of The Gifted we’re treated to flashbacks of Lorna’s life. We finally get to see her in her teen years where she struggles to fit in. As a bipolar orphan with green hair, she has trouble making friends. Her aunt tries to be as accepting and supportive as she can but being forced to her hide her powers is taking a toll. She gets the medallion from her dad on her thirteenth birthday but it’s the only sign he even exists. As she grows up, Lorna struggles to fit in and is constantly arrested for stirring up trouble with her powers.

However, those experiences make her realize the safest place for Dawn is with her aunt. While she once hated growing up there, she now has a new understanding. Her aunt wasn’t hiding her from Magneto but hiding her for him. Now Lorna has to ask her to do the same for Dawn, but at least her daughter will still be in the country and with family.

John and Clarice suffer more relationship struggles as they hunt for Rebecca. They find her before the Inner Circle and get some information. She says they’re looking for someone or something called Regimen but conveniently leaves out how she murdered a bunch of people. At least they have a new direction to look into. But Clarice is shaken following their meeting with Rebecca because that energy from the twists made her sick. She’s worried John is going to kill himself by continuously running into danger without a care for his health.
