Norm Macdonald Has a Show season 1, episode 8 recap: Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton pays a visit in episode 8 of Netflix series Norm Macdonald Has a Show. They discuss everything from Merle Haggard to The 3 Stooges.

Did you know Michael Keaton was a standup comedian for some years? He was, and that’s how he first met Norm Macdonald. That’s just one little bit of trivia from this episode of Norm Macdonald Has a Show. As another bit of trivia, Burl Ives, Leon Redbone, and Michael Keaton have all played snowmen on film.

We also learn that Norm’s uncle wasn’t a social drinker and that when Norm met Merle Haggard, Merle pretended to be a fan just to be nice. Keaton says that he knows music icon Van Morrison, and first met the man when he was in a rage. As another odd bit of trivia, neither Keaton nor Norm Macdonald relates to the 3 Stooges (which, honestly, might surprise some people). The two then discuss bluegrass and country and western music, including Willie Nelson and Billy Joe Shaver. They also make fun of John Wayne a little bit.

Did Jon Lovitz rip Michael Keaton off?

In perhaps the episode’s most controversial moment, Norm suggests that comedian (and fellow SNL alumni) Jon Lovitz ripped off Michael Keaton’s persona of the Pathological Liar Guy. Granted, this accusation probably won’t make or break any careers anymore, but it’s interesting in an age where such accusations can seriously downgrade comedy careers. In any case, you can easily find some of Keaton’s standup online, if you should feel so inclined (and why not?). It turns out he’s actually not bad but probably went over to acting as more of a full-time gig (let’s face it: That’s where the potential big money’s at).

Birdman and Beetlejuice 2

The two discuss some other obvious things, like Batman, Birdman and a possible Beetlejuice sequel. Quite simply, Keaton doesn’t really provide any info on a possible followup. As one might imagine, some interesting aspects of Keaton’s career weren’t really gone over. For example, Keaton has depicted three different bird-themed superhero characters (also portraying the villainous Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming). However, they discuss Birdman a little bit, though mostly so Norm can ask about the ending (he doesn’t like open ends to movies).

Ultimately, Macdonald and Keaton seem to genuinely get along. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when Norm calls him the best comedian he’s ever witnessed. Sure enough, the old clips suggest that, at some point in his career, Michael Keaton might as well revive his stand-up routine. At this point, he probably has nothing to lose. Not only is he rich anyway, but if he bombs badly enough he can always just say, “Screw this, I’m going back to my Batcave!”
