Netflix announces epic cast for Dark Crystal prequel series

Netflix’s Dark Crystal prequel series has announced an out-of-this-world all-star voice cast.

Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance is a prequel series set years before the events that take place in the 1982 film. It will follow three Gelflings who “discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.” The series is being produced by The Jim Hensen Company, which was, of course, responsible for the original film. The Transporter director Louis Leterrier will co-produce and direct the ten-episode series, so the results should be pretty action-packed and epic.

Speaking of epic, the just announced voice cast is beyond that. Just looking at the list of names associated with the series is somewhat overwhelming. Just when you think it couldn’t possibly get any better, it does. Taron Egerton (Kingsman franchise), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), and Nathalie Emmanuel (Games of Thrones) will voice the three main Gelflings, but that’s really just the tip of the iceberg.

Casting highlights include voice acting legend Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series, Regular Show), comedy legend Eddie Izzard (Hannibal), theater legend Harvey Fierstein (The Good Wife), geek legend Simon Pegg (Mission: Impossible, Star Trek), anger translator legend Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele), and Lonely Island legend Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

Of course, those are only my personal highlights, because it doesn’t stop there. The series also stars Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), Helena Bonham-Carter (The Crown), Harris Dickinson (Trust),   Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Shazad Latif (Star Trek: Discovery), Theo James (Divergent), Toby Jones (Sherlock), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror), Mark Strong (Kingsman franchise), Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), Ralph Ineson (Game of Thrones), Jason Isaacs (Star Trek: Discovery), and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Trapped).

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a cast line up this amazing. Netflix really seems to want this series to be as epic as possible, as confirmed by The Jim Hensen Company CEO, Lisa Hensen:

"“Netflix has a deep respect for my father’s original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in The Dark Crystal story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world.” If she’s excited, I think we all should be.”"

The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance does not have a release date yet, but should premiere on Netflix sometime next year.
