Breeda Wool joins cast of Netflix’s GLOW in recurring role
Breeda Wool has been added to the cast of the Netflix comedy series GLOW in a new recurring role.
Breeda Wool (Mr. Mercedes) has joined the cast of GLOW alongside series stars Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin. She will be playing Denise, a former showgirl and current dance captain at the Fan-Tan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. As her career begins to dwindle she desperately looks for a way to extend her prospects and provide for her daughter. Enter GLOW.
GLOW revolves around the campy, glitzy world of the 1980s female wrestling scene and the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. It offers washed up and struggling actresses a last chance at stardom, including Ruth Wilder (series star Alison Brie) who joins 12 Hollywood castoffs, including former soap opera star Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) as her main competition.
It seems Wool’s Denise somehow finds her way into the GLOW world, perhaps by chance as they pass through town or recruited by the group manager Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron). Her entrance into the group could upset the delicate balance of relationships among the women as she climbs her way through the ranks.
While GLOW is a uniquely funny and outrageous female-led comedy, some have pointed out that it skimps on approaching the darker side of female wrestling. While Denise and others might join GLOW as a desperate attempt to provide for their families, the reality is that most wrestlers barely made enough to survive themselves.
Given the uniquely punishing work of the industry, the job often proved to cause more harm to the performers than the money was worse. But what do you do when it feels like it’s your only option? It might prove to be an interesting storyline if the series chose to address – even superficially – the tragedy of the profession.
