Michelle Yeoh to star in Star Trek spin-off about Captain Georgiou
CBS All Access has Michelle Yeoh set to star in a Star Trek spin-off based on her Discovery character.
CBS All Access has commissioned a Star Trek: Discovery spin-off starring Michelle Yeoh as Captain Phillipa Georgiou and it already sounds phenomenal. In case you’re wondering whether the series will follow Mirrorverse Georgiou or original Georgiou, the storyline is said to follow her adventures with Starfleet’s shady Section 31 organization – although, whose to say the memory of original Georgiou couldn’t pop up now and then as Mirror Georgiou continues to impersonate the prestigious (and deceased) former Starfleet Captain. The series will be co-run by Discovery writers Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt.
In an interview with Deadline, executive producer Alex Kurtzman expressed his excitement over the new series.
"“Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”"
Not only will it be exciting to learn more about the origins and involvement of Section 31, which has been looming over the Star Trek universe since its introduction in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but it will be so much fun to follow the exploits of a strong and nuanced character as brought to life by the incredible Michelle Yeoh.
Mirrorverse characters aren’t as simple as good versus evil, it just so happens that the conditions of their universe often calls for a certain amorality to survive and thrive. That’s part of what makes the concept of this series so exciting because it gives the writers the chance to present viewers with intellectual and moral dilemmas and to explore the various shades of good and evil. Taking this journey with an ultimately likable character like Georgiou makes the concept that much more interesting. I hope they really run with it and stay true to the Star Trek ethos to explore these social issues.
Can we also talk about how wonderfully female-centric this series is? With Yeoh as the series lead and the co-executive producers being women as well, this is set to be one of the most barrier-breaking series in the franchise yet. Yeoh puts it perfectly:
"“I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”"
