In the latest episode of Shadowhunters, Clary desperately tries to escape Jonathan’s clutches in Paris, while Magnus faces his mortality.

Clary Fairchild’s attempt to kill her brother Jonathan Morgenstern backfired in the previous episode of Shadowhunters when she almost died from the same injuries. In an effort to protect her son from danger, Lilith, the Queen of Hell, drew a binding rune on both siblings. Now, Clary’s fate is bound to Jonathan’s.

It’s Time to Head to Paris

Jonathan is still under the notion that he can make up for his murderous behavior in the past and win Clary over. His first step is to transport Lilith’s apartment to the City of Love so that they can get to know each other. Clary, who has become much smarter over the course of the series, uses Jonathan’s desperation to her advantage.

“Maybe I do owe you a chance,” she tells her brother. Under the guise of buying art supplies, Clary changes her hair, and she and Jonathan head out to explore the beautiful city.

After savoring the culinary delights of Paris, Jonathan reveals that he wishes to gift Clary an old Morgenstern relic that will help them bring back the dignity of their family name. While walking, Clary intentionally collides with a Shadowhunter from the Paris Institute and steals his stele.

When Jonathan tries to coax the demon dealer into giving him his family heirloom – the Morning Star Sword – Clary is asked to wait outside. She tries to use the stolen stele, but the French Shadowhunter spots her and arrests her.

Inside the shop, the dealer refuses to hand over a powerful weapon to another Morgenstern, so Jonathan lashes out, seemingly killing the demon. As Jonathan tries to search for the location of the sword, he notices Clary has disappeared. He soon catches up with the Frenchman, killing him to ‘save’ his sister. Either Jonathan is actually delusional and harboring secret romantic feelings for his sister, or he’s desperately trying to gaslight Clary into believing he wants to do good.

Simon and Izzy’s Sewer Adventures

According to Raphael, there is a legend that says the oldest vampire in the world lives down in the New York sewers. Simon Lewis is adamant to find this entity so that he can get rid of the Seelie Queen’s protective Mark of Cain. Since Simon’s girlfriend, Maia Roberts refused to accompany him, Isabelle ‘Izzy’ Lightwood joins him. Unbeknownst to them, they are being watched.

Simon and Izzy go deep into the sewer network and stumble upon the vampire. Simon immediately starts babbling about the Mark of Cain when the vampire attacks him. Both Simon and the vampire’s Marks activate to protect them. To Simon’s surprise, this person is Cain himself.

Cain (Pasha Ebrahimi) tells Simon about how Lilith decided to exact revenge on Adam after he left her for Eve. Lilith turned Adam’s children, Cain and Abel, against each other, which led to the infamous incident of fratricide. Lilith then turned Cain into a Daylighter, and later the Seelie Queen gave him the Mark of Cain to protect him. Unfortunately, this has led to years of Cain being hunted and demonized. No wonder he hides away in the sewers.

When Simon asks how he can remove the Mark, Cain explains that only the Seelie Queen can erase it. He gives Simon the rock with which he killed Abel as an offering to the Queen explaining that he had attempted a removal ritual once, but was too afraid to die. Simon is understandably terrified by this comment, but he and Izzy venture into the Seelie realm anyway.

Izzy’s ex, Meliorn (Jade Hassouné) guides them to the Seelie Queen (Lola Flanery) who agrees to remove the Mark of Cain from Simon’s forehead. She asks for the Stone of Cain and reiterates that Simon could be facing death as part of the ritual. Simon stands strong – he wants this Mark gone.

Izzy briefly tries to talk Simon out of going through with the ritual but doesn’t push it. She watches as Simon endures the excruciating procedure which leaves him spent. The only way to revive him is to give Simon mortal or Nephilim blood. Without hesitation, Izzy slices her hand and feeds Simon her blood.

But Izzy’s efforts aren’t enough. Simon needs more blood, so Izzy offers him her wrist to bite. Both of them are well aware of Izzy’s addiction struggles with vampire venom, but to save her friend, Izzy takes the risk.

Magnus Faces his Mortality

Now that Magnus Bane has given up his Warlock magic, he has to find new ways to protect himself and the people he loves. Who better to train him in defense than Alec Lightwood? The two of them begin their first sparring session and it is as adorable as can be expected. While Magnus continues flirting with Alec, Alec insists on being serious – that doesn’t last long.

Magnus is really good at hand-to-hand combat, using his strength and lithe physique to best Alec at every turn. It is fun to see Harry Shum Jr. break out some cool dance moves during the sequence. How much either of them learns from this session is up for debate, because they end up in the bedroom pretty fast.

"“The thing about moments is that you’ll miss them if you keep running after the next one.”"

Realizing everything he needs is standing right in front of him, Magnus agrees to take it slow. Their intimate moment, however, is interrupted when Alec gets a message from Jace Wayland. Clary could still be alive.
