Chandler Riggs thoughts on Carl Grimes’s new “replacement”

Fans of The Walking Dead comics have likely noticed that while Carl is no longer on the show, his plot lines still live on.

Throughout the second half of the season, the Whisperer Lydia (Cassady McClincy) has been growing close with Henry (Matt Lintz), a character who has no counterpart in the comics.  Now of course, in The Walking Dead comics, Lydia’s romance plot had originally gone to Carl.

Naturally, this has left some folks wondering how the former Carl Grimes, Chandler Riggs, would feel about one of his character’s most signific plotlines from the comic being passed on to someone else.

Riggs addressed this question in a recent interview with TooFab, denying any hard feelings on the matter, even going so far as to say he was personal friends with Lintz and his family, through his older sister, Madison Lintz, who coincidentally also played Sophia on The Walking Dead, another romance of Carl’s from the comics never realized on screen.

According to Riggs “I’ve known all of them for a very long time. It’s super cool seeing someone I know step into the shoes that Carl, the path that Carl was supposed to take, it’s pretty cool.”

Despite showrunner Angela Kang’s insistence that Henry isn’t merely a copy and paste of Carl Grimes and that “there’s nobody that’s going to exactly replace Carl”, it’s not hard to see where some people would think that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Honestly, ever since it was announced that Lydia would be part of the current Whisperers arc, it had been clear the show’s writers wouldn’t be leaving her plot line with Carl by the wayside and character transference on the show is far from unprecedented.
