Transformations

Jonathan Morgenstern is slowly turning into the ‘demon that ends all demons’, and the Seelie Queen (who is still his captive) is enjoying every second of it. Jonathan’s transformation makes him vulnerable, but the Seelie Queen promises to keep him safe in the Seelie realm.

Jonathan emerges from his cocoon with a new platinum blond look and allows the Queen to guide him. He is either unaware, or doesn’t care, that she is intent on declaring war on the Shadowhunters. With a simple thought, Jonathan executes some Shadowhunters that the Seelie Queen has captured. Looks like the Queen thinks she can control Jonathan, but can she?

Elsewhere, having been cured of his lycanthropy, Luke’s Shadowhunter runes return, but he’s not free yet. After the Heavenly Fire fiasco, the Praetors want Luke to spy on the Clave – they need to make sure the Clave is kept in check. Luke doesn’t respond well to blackmail, but he is willing to keep the Downworld safe.

The Calm Before the Storm

Clary and Jace have found another thing in common with each other – they have both been possessed by the Queen of Hell, Lilith’s machinations and done terrible things. Clary was there for Jace when he had to cope with the murders he’d committed as the Owl, now Jace must return the favour.

Simon Lewis leaves Jordan’s wake after learning that Maia plans to reconnect with her parents. Maia has made Simon realise that he needs to be open about his feelings for Izzy. Izzy responds in kind, before erupting in flames. Looks like the shrapnel from the Glorious sword exploding has affected her.

Helen Blackthorn, who worked with Aldertree on Heavenly Fire, examines Izzy and delivers terrible news – Izzy’s body has been infused with Heavenly Fire and her body will become unstable every time she’s close to something with demon blood, especially Downworlders. Prolonged exposure will lead to Izzy’s body exploding like the sword and could harm any Downworlders she’s around as well.

Alec is desperate to bring Magnus back from Edom. Though his mother, Maryse, warns him about the dangers, Alec believes he can succeed. ‘I have a wedding to plan’. Magnus is not at all pleased about taking his father’s place in Edom, especially not when Lilith barges into his keep. Lilith wants Magnus to open the rift and let her out so she can kill Jonathan, but Magnus doesn’t trust her. In a bid to keep his friends safe, Magnus refuses Lilith’s request.

Taking the Fight to Edom

Izzy tries to play down the news to the rest of her team, reiterating that it’s a temporary condition. Now that the cat’s out of the bag about her and Simon, the conversation progresses to Lilith. She’s forming an army against Magnus. Alec knows he has to help Magnus, but only those with demon blood can survive in Edom.

Izzy suggests she goes, after all, she does have Heavenly Fire coursing through her veins, but Alec has another idea. He wants Simon to turn him into a vampire. Since no one has a better idea, the Shadowhunters check the archives.

To protect her friends, Izzy slips into Edom through a Seelie doorway with Meliorn’s help. When Meliorn informs the others about Izzy’s whereabouts, Clary decides to create a rune that forms a temporary parabatai bond between Shadowhunters and Downworlders. It’s a risky tactic, but will protect the team in Edom.

Alec invites the newly-restored Lorenzo Rey, along with Meliorn to save Magnus, Izzy and the world. Clary’s new rune allows her to share Simon’s vampire powers, while Alec and Lorenzo share warlock magic. Jace is unimpressed that his new parabatai is Meliorn – now he can’t lie.

The six of them portal to Edom, but are separated on the way there. While Lorenzo has to keep Alec calm, Simon and Clary race to Magnus’ location. Meliorn is enjoying himself sussing truths out of Jace, before they are interrupted by demons. Luckily for them, Izzy commands fire powers and disposes of the demons with ease. Izzy, Jace and Meliorn locate Lilith’s castle but decide against letting Izzy attack Lilith on her own.

Alec and Lorenzo find Magnus’ keep to the Warlock’s delight. Alec promises to stay with Magnus in Edom forever, but when Simon and Clary arrive with no Izzy by their side, romance is put on hold.
