Netflix orders Midnight Mass from Haunting of Hill House duo
Netflix orders new horror series Midnight Mass from The Haunting of Hill House duo Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy.
Netflix has ordered a new horror story from The Haunting of Hill House producers Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy. The series is called Midnight Mass – apparently unrelated to the Vertigo comic series Midnight, Mass – and is about an isolated island community that experiences strange events, omens, and miracles after the arrival of a charismatic and mysterious priest.
The seven-episode series continues a partnership between Netflix and Intrepid Pictures for a multi-year television deal. Along with Midnight Mass, the horror duo are also producing a second season to The Haunting of Hill House after the series breakout success. The second season will be based on the Henry James novella The Haunting of Bly Manor and will star Hill House’s Victoria Pedettri.
Flanagan and Macy are the creative team behind horror thrillers like Oculus, Gerald’s Game, Hush, and Before I Wake, all of which have debuted to critical and popular acclaim. Gerald’s Game is particularly notable for being among the first wave of adaptations in the ongoing Stephen King revival (and one of two acclaimed adaptations that premiered on Netflix in 2017, the other being 1922).
All except Oculus premiered on Netflix and eventually led to the creative duo teaming up with Netflix to create quality horror television. The Haunting of Hill House is based on Shirley Jackson’s seminal novel of the same name, which is considered among many horror writers to be an inspiring and groundbreaking work in the genre. It is perhaps fitting that the Flanagan and Macy’s adaptation joined the ranks of works in the ongoing horror renaissance.
While there does not yet appear to be a timeline for the release of Midnight Mass or any information other than the plot, in the meantime we know that The Haunting of Bly Manor is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2020. There is plenty to look forward to for fans of horror in the coming year.
