Chernobyl

Premiered: May 6th, 2019

Where: HBO

Along with When They See Us and Escape at Dannemora, I think we can expect HBO’s Chernobyl to be an Emmy favorite this year. In fact, I think these shows will be the top three, making it difficult to say who could walk away with the most nominations.

If you’ve heard of the horrible incident at Chernobyl back in the late 80s, then you’re aware of the devastation it caused as a result of the unfortunate explosion. But imagining, reading, and thinking about it is one thing, watching the limited series and getting a glance at how it may have all gone down is another.

Chernobyl is a phenomenal series that tells the story as accurately and detailed as possible. The imagery, production, and acting are on-point and worthy of being acknowledged. In my opinion, Chernobyl is definitely a top-three contender!

Sharp Objects

Premiered: July 8th, 2018

Where: HBO

It’s been a hot minute since we thought about last year’s critically-acclaimed Sharp Objects, based on Gillian Flynn’s novel by the same name. Apart from last year’s Emmys which it did not meet the deadline for, Sharp Objects was a big part of award season, with both Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson walking away with awards.

If you can’t recall what was so great about this show, I’ll remind you that it was largely the gloom and doom that came with it and how Amy Adams spearheaded the entire series as her character Camille Preaker, an alcoholic with mental health issues. It was dramatic, mysterious, and suspenseful, and certainly keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

I think that there’s a possibility the show may not even compare to some of the others that came after it, but I wouldn’t write it off completely. There is a lot to admire about the series that had everyone saying, “Don’t tell Mama.”

Fosse/Verdon

Premiered: April 9th, 2019

Where: FX

Based on Fosse by Sam Wasson, Fosse/Verdon tells the real-life story of the tumultuous relationship between director and choreographer Bob Fosse and Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon. Now, I haven’t personally watched this series but based on all the promos and hype surrounding it, I won’t be shocked if it will be amongst the five shows that will get nominated in this category.

Emmy voters are suckers for these kinds of stories, based on the past, and with the talents of Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell representing the faces of the story, it’s basically a shoo-in at this point.
