The Netflix limited series Unbelievable has set its premiere date and released a new trailer with the announcement.

The Netflix original series Unbelievable has set its release date for September 13. The series, based on the true events and written by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), has also released an intense trailer that features stars Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever.

Unbelievable tells the story of a woman (Dever) who was raped in her own home and the system that comes to dismiss her story. Detectives played by Collette and Wever link her case to a serial rapist and struggle to bring the culprit to justice and vindicate his victims.

While the trailer presents a gripping, tightly plotted crime drama, it also presents an issue that is all too common in the case of rape reports – survivor blame or doubt. Half the trailer is of male investigators, doctors, and prosecutors cross-examining the survivor and poking holes in her story, finally coming to the conclusion that she made the whole thing up. Only two female detectives link her case to a pattern of crimes being perpetrated all over the area, the rapist avoiding detection by committing the rapes in different towns and taking advantage of the lack of police communication across town lines.

Unbelievable is being produced by CBS TV Studios, Katie Couric, Sarah Timberman, and Carl Beverly. Grant is serving as showrunner, executive producer,  and co-director, with Lisa Cholodenko also directing.

If you want to know more about the real-life case before the series is released, the show is based on the Pulitzer-winning Marshall Project and ProPublica article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” and the This American Life episode “Anatomy of Doubt.”
