Bright Spots

That said, there were several bright spots in Yellowstone‘s second season. Despite some of the more ridiculous violent shenanigans they got into, Danny Huston as Dan Jenkins, Jefferson White as Jimmy, Forrie J. Smith as Lloyd, and especially Cole Hauser as Rip gave stand-out performances. Each actor added new layers to their characters and their onscreen vitality gave weight to the story each time they appeared.

White and Smith had some beautiful moments together as Lloyd helped Jimmy navigate the rodeo. Lloyd’s quiet pride and Jimmy’s glee were palpable and made for some especially touching scenes.

Huston as the outsider who doesn’t understand the rules was wonderful as he tried to keep up with the various forces coming at him. I was sad to see him go in the season finale.

Finally, Hauser continues to do stellar work bringing Rip Wheeler to completely realized life. Rip’s actions are not always admirable but the way he wears his heart on his sleeve makes him one of the show’s most accessible characters. Rip had several moving moments this season, especially in the finale when he learned John Dutton called him his son. Not to mention, Rip’s love for Beth is one of the few things that make her slightly sympathetic. If someone like Rip cares for her, Beth must have some redeeming qualities, even if they’re buried deep.

As a whole, Yellowstone‘s second season was tense and brutal, combining rugged Western moments with soap opera drama. Sheridan and Paramount Network have provided a few clues about where things may go in season 3. Personally, I hope there’s some tonal recalibration and some greater character development for the Dutton clan, especially Beth. Most of all, I hope Sheridan hires a female writer to bring a different perspective to the show.
