Disenchantment: Part 2 – September 20

This is part two of the first season of Matt Groening’s twisted fairytale series Disenchantment. The series follows the boozy Princess Bean and her unlikely friends as they set off on quests across the kingdom. It’s mostly about the teenage Bean and the time in her life when she’s stuck between childhood leisure and adult responsibility. Part two comes more than a year after the first part aired, a trend that Netflix will follow when the show returns for season two in 2020, with the second part airing in 2021.

Reviews for the show is mixed, but most agree that it has great potential that will hopefully materialize in part two. If nothing else, the show has a fantastic pedigree (Groening created The Simpsons and Futurama) and an amazing voice cast (John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Abbi Jacobson, Eric Andre, and Nat Faxon, just to name a few), so even if part one put you off, part two might be worth a second try.

Bard of Blood – September 27

Bard of Blood is an Indian espionage thriller in which three agents are sent on a mission to rescue four Indian spies who have been captured. The agents’ team dynamic looks tense as one of their member’s past comes back to haunt them. Despite the fact that it looks like any other conventional action movie, the trailer makes it look like a lot of fun. I wonder what an Indian production might do to subvert Hollywood action movie conventions or make them their own.

I’m fairly certain the series is supposed to be serious, but there’s something about it that gives you a sense that it’s at least partly a tongue-in-cheek homage to Jason Bourne-type action flicks. And if you’re the kind of person who likes reading the book from which your shows are adapted, Bard of Blood is based on a novel of the same name by Bilal Siddiqi.
