Apple’s latest drama, Shantaram, taps Charlie Hunnam as the lead.

The Sons of Anarchy veteran is set to headline the upcoming series for Apple TV. Deadline reports Shantaram will serve as a return to television for Charlie Hunnam. It will be a ten-episode series, with American Hustle writer Eric Warren Singer set to write the adaptation.

The drama is based on Gregory David Robert’s hit book, which revolves around Hunnam’s character on the run. There was an intense bidding war for the rights as well as the sequel, The Mountain Shadow.

Hunnam’s character, Lin, is cut off from everyone he loves in an attempt to escape Australian prison. Shantaram will take place in India, after Lin takes refuge in Bombay and navigates the underworld of the city. Deadline confirms the series will be filmed in both Australia and India for season 1.

Justin Kurzel, who will direct the first two episodes, has signed on as an executive producer alongside Singer, David Erickson (Fear the Walking Dead), Steve Golin of Anonymous Content, Nicole Clemens, Andrea Barron, and Richard Sharkey.
