Arrowverse: Tom Welling set to reprise Smallville role for Crisis on Infinite Earths

Tom Welling will don his Smallville cape for the upcoming Arrowverse crossover!

Talk about going out with a bang! The Arrowverse seems to have the greatest crossover event in history plan and it’s hard not to feel like this is the universe’s version of Avengers: Endgame. Going back to one of the most iconic superhero shows of all time, Smallville will be joining the Crisis on Infinite Earths event. Star, Tom Welling, will be reprising his role of Clark Kent, now bringing a total of three Supermans to the crossover.

Tyler Hoechlin, who plays the current version of Superman in the Arrowverse, has already been confirmed to return for Crisis. Brandon Routh, who stars as Ray Palmer on Legends of Tomorrow, is also set to reprise his role of Clark Kent from the 2006 movie Superman Returns. However, Deadline notes getting Welling back as the infamous hero was a bit more difficult. In the past, he’s been reluctant to return as Superman, and it was even reported back when Smallville ended that he didn’t want to actually don the suit.

While he’s back now, there’s actually no word on whether Tom Welling will be joining the other two as Superman or just as Clark Kent. This is his first time reprising the character, and undoubtedly the Arrowverse is hoping to keep as much of Crisis under wraps as possible.

The co-creator and executive producer of Arrow, Marc Guggenheim, did release a statement about how incredible it is to have Welling join the crossover.

"“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it. So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”"

The Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover is one of the most infamous storylines in DC Comics history. Fans have already begun speculating what will happen, especially because two major heroes die in the comics. The crossover will unite the entire Arrowverse, and maybe a few other familiar faces. With Welling’s involvement, there’s hope that other Smallville veterans like Michael Rosenbaum (who played Lex Luthor), Erica Durance (who played Lois Lane), and Justin Hartley (who played Oliver Queen) could also make appearances.
