The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony aired Sunday night on Fox.
Was it me (or the several glasses of prosecco), or did this year’s Primetime Emmys broadcast seem like a big old mess?
I don’t want to hold Fox (the network host this year) accountable because I don’t they had anything to do with the flow of the show. Although, their shameless plugs were a tad excessive.
Between flubbed lines, jokes that fell completely flat – I’m looking at you Ken Jeong – and the strange announcer (Thomas Lennon) gimmick giving no actual information after an award win, it felt like I was watching one big whiplash. I will say, I liked how they played actual music after announcing winners instead of your typical award show orchestral arrangement. You can’t go wrong with Lizzo, Miley, and Muse.
When it comes down to it, I think not having a host makes for a muddled and chaotic show.
The host is the glue that holds it all together. It may have worked well for the Oscars, but it didn’t work well for the Emmys. Especially when they paraded a slew of popular past awards show hosts to present awards, like Amy Poehler, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, James Corden, and Seth Meyers. Anyone of those folks could have done a great job, so don’t throw them all in our faces just to show how good they are in contrast with how bad the show is.
There still were a lot of great moments and not-so-great moments. Let’s discuss!
