Cowboy Bebop: Production shuts down after John Cho’s injury
Cowboy Bebop suffers a massive setback as production is shut down.
One of Netflix’s most anticipated new adaptations won’t be out for at least another year. Deadline is reporting Cowboy Bebop is expected to shut down production for a lengthy period of time after series lead, John Cho, suffered an accident on set.
According to Deadline, during a stunt scene Cho sustained a knee injury. It’s been described as a “freak accident” and that the scene was “well-rehearsed” beforehand. Based on reports, Cho’s injury is quite extensive and he will need to return to Los Angeles for surgery. After the procedure, he will start rehabilitation which is expected to be quite long.
While we hope for a speedy recovery, fans of Cowboy Bebop will need to wait a bit longer for the live-action adaptation. The original anime series is considered a cult classic and revolves around Spike Spiegel (Cho) as well as his adventures. It’s considered a space western and is extremely beloved. Deadline is reporting that production expects to remain shut down for at least seven to nine months but will set an official schedule once Cho has recovered.
Despite only being a few episodes into filming, Netflix has made it clear they do not plan to recast the main role. A spokesperson gave a short statement to Deadline, asserting the streaming service’s choice to stand by Cho.
"“Our thoughts are with John, and he has our complete support as he recuperates from this injury.”"
Netflix gave Cowboy Bebop a ten-episode series order earlier this year with an impressive cast. Even though it will be a long wait, the live-action adaptation is bound to be worth it!
