Apple TV+ is expanding its roster of original content with an adaptation of Foundation, by science-fiction great, Isaac Asimov.

Isaac Asimov’s work has been adapted to screen several times over, some more successfully than others. Now, Apple TV+, the latest addition to streaming platforms, has thrown its hat in the ring with an adaptation of Asimov’s renowned trilogy, Foundation. And the show could very well be on its way to success thanks to its lead cast.

Deadline reports that Pushing Daisies and Guardians of the Galaxy actor Lee Pace is set to star as Brother Day, the Emperor of the Galaxy. Additionally, Jared Harris, Emmy-nominee for his work on HBO’s Chernobyl, and Moriarty opposite Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, will play the protagonist Hari Seldon.

While Pace has proven himself to be capable of playing grandiloquent characters, Harris isn’t necessarily the actor one would have had in mind for mild-mannered mathematician Seldon. For one, by dint of Seldon’s first name being Hari, and not Harry, one would have hoped that the showrunners had cast an actor of Indian origin. Hari is a very Indian name, so the cast is a safe choice at the moment.

Considering the complex world-building that Foundation involves, it’s a surprise that the series from David Goyer, Josh Friedman, and Skydance Television will only be 10 episodes long. Seems like viewers are likely to be in for a plot-driven, action-heavy storyline focusing on anarchy, rather than the languorous, contemplative tale that Asimov wrote and kept adding to during his writing career.

The production values of this show will be a huge selling point. Any time showrunners venture into creating a science-fiction show, the effects need to be believable, if not stellar. Since Apple TV+ is still new to the game, one can expect that they’ll be investing plenty of the budget into making a spectacular show.

There are no updates yet on when the show will air.
