Cloak & Dagger is officially over.

The critically beloved Marvel series won’t be returning for season 3. Deadline reports Freeform let the options expire for the cast after five months of silence on a renewal or cancellation. However, Cloak & Dagger fans will get to see these characters pop up at least one more time in the future.

While the network didn’t state an explicit reason, there could have been a few different factors as to why season 3 won’t happen. Ratings are a big one, with Cloak & Dagger suffering nearly a 40% drop between the first and second season. According to Deadline, the numbers were similar to PLL: The Perfectionists which was also canceled by Freeform.

However, the recent shift in Marvel Television could also be part of the reason. It was recently announced that Jeph Loeb would be stepping away from Marvel after years spent working on the television side. Kevin Feige is slated to take over as the chief creative officer and focus might be shifted to the Disney+ series now.

Freeform released a statement to Deadline expressing their love for the series despite the sad news. There’s no denying the show was a critical darling even if it never found its audience.

"“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told. We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”"

Cloak & Dagger was about two teenagers, Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy (Olivia Holt), and their journies. Tyrone wields darkness and comes from the wealthy part of town but still struggles with racism while Tandy uses light daggers but lives on the street as she deals with addiction. Their stories are intertwined and the show focuses on their unique connection.

Luckily, fans of the series will get to see these characters one more time. Both Tandy and Tyrone will be making the trip to California for the crossover with Runaways this season. If the Hulu show gets a renewal then there’s a chance they appear again. For now, fans can check out the show on Hulu.
