Amazon Prime has renewed the legal drama Goliath for a fourth and final season, bringing an end to one of Amazon’s most popular series.

Amazon Prime has announced that they are renewing the David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro legal drama Goliath for a fourth and final season. The series follows down and out lawyer Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thornton) as he defends everyday people against corrupt corporate giants. Considering the political climate since it aired in 2016, the series premise understandably struck a chord with audiences, making Goliath Amazon’s most binged show ever as of 2017. The season four announcement comes just a month after the release of Goliath season three.

Season three saw McBride go up against a billionaire rancher (Dennis Quaid) and his sister (Amy Brenneman) as they scheme to sell water at a premium to the residents and small-time farmers in the drought-stricken Central Valley. Goliath showrunner, Lawrence Trilling said:

"“I’m thrilled we get another season to tell Billy McBride’s story. Our latest case tackles a timely global crisis that impacts an entire generation, and we will be adding some exceptional talent to our already amazing cast.”"

Clearly Goliath pursues narratives that resonate with contemporary concerns. It examines how powerful people take advantage of and exacerbate critical situations for personal gain, with zero consideration or foresight about the consequences to future generations. It’s a scenario that has been playing out in real life every day for more than a century and it’s no wonder that viewers find satisfaction in McBride’s jaded attitude and struggle against corruption.

It certainly helps that the series has a quality pedigree, with creators Kelley and Shapiro (Boston Legal, Ally McBeal, The Practice) having developed some of the most important legal dramas in television history.

With a cast headed by Thornton and supported by Nina Arianda, Tania Raymonde, Diana Hopper, Ana de la Reguera and Julie Brister, the series is continuously bolstered by quality guest stars like Quaid, Brenneman, William Hurt, Beau Bridges, Griffin Dunne, Mark Duplass, and more. Trilling promises more exceptional talent for the final season, so it will be exciting to see who next year’s Goliath will be and what new challenge McBride will have to face.
