The Amazon Prime hit series Goliath has been renewed for a third season with Billy Bob Thornton returning.

Goliath, the Amazon Prime drama series created by David E. Kelley (Boston Legal, Mr. Mercedes)  and Jonathan Shapiro (Boston Legal, The Blacklist), has been renewed for a third season at the streaming service.

The series, about a small-time lawyer who goes up against “Goliath” corporations for ethical misdeeds, stars Billy Bob Thornton (Fargo) as lawyer Billy McBride, Tania Raymonde (Lost) as Brittany Gold, and Diana Hopper (Criminal Minds) as Denise McBride.

Season three will see McBride go up against a billionaire rancher and his sister as he investigates the death of an old friend.

This season will also add a lot of big names to the cast, including Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow), Amy Brenneman (The Leftovers), Beau Bridges (Homeland), Griffin Dunne (I Love Dick), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), and Shamier Anderson (Wynonna Earp).

While season two was not particularly well rated among Amazon subscribers, perhaps the addition of these new cast members will draw both old and new viewers to season three.

In another change for the series, Lawrence Trilling (Pushing Daisies) will replace Clyde Phillips (Dexter) as showrunner. The series has seen a lot of drama behind the scenes, with David E. Kelley being pushed out as showrunner during season one and Phillips resigning mid-season two.

Both departures required rewrites and reshoots that shortened the episode count of the seasons, putting production over-budget, and likely contributing to season two’s lukewarm reception.

Despite its troubles, Goliath was Amazon’s most-binged show its first season and it seems executives remain hopeful the series will continue to attract viewers.
