Netflix announces cast for horror-thriller Brand New Cherry Flavor
By Luke Lucas
Netflix announced plans to co-produce and stream new revenge horror series Brand New Cherry Flavor. The first casting news is out. We’ve got the details!
Per a Deadline exclusive, Netflix is set to co-produce and stream revenge horror series Brand New Cherry Flavor. It’s based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Todd Grimson. The series will consist of eight episodes, which seems to be the current standard for streaming services. Nick Antosca (The Act) and Lenore Zion (Billions) are writing the series and will serve as executive producers. The first episode is set to be directed by Arkasha Stevenson (Channel Zero). All three worked on SyFy’s Channel Zero.
The cast is lead by Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel, Undone). If you haven’t already checked out her performance in Amazon Prime’s Undone, you should. It’s an absolute treasure. Rosa Salazar rules. The rest of the cast is strong, as well. It includes Catherine Keener (Get Out), Eric Lange (Unbelievable), Jeff Ward (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and Manny Jacinto (The Good Place).
The Deadline report describes Brand New Cherry Flavor as set in 1990s Los Angeles. An aspiring filmmaker, Lisa Nova (Salazar), goes on a mind-bending, supernatural revenge trip that takes her from Beverly Hills to the rain forests of Brazil. As for the nature of revenge, we can refer back to Grimson’s novel.
According to the book description on Amazon, Lisa Nova is well aware of the misogynistic nature of a Hollywood that is full of has-beens and users. She thinks her art can transcend all of that. But, after Lisa is betrayed one too many times, she turns to the leader of a biker gang. Lisa suddenly has to deal with white jaguars and cannibalistic demons. And, in something that sounds familiar to Undone, the lines between dreams and reality will become blurred.
I’m excited. Rosa Salazar rules. Yes, I will always say that in reference to her. The rest of the cast is legit, to say the least. And the story sounds trippy and bonkers with lots of room for neon noir and gore. Netflix and UCP will co-produce the series, which will stream exclusively on Netflix.
