Mystery Science Theater 3000: Netflix cancels reboot after two seasons
Sadly, there won’t be another season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Netflix.
The streaming service has officially decided not to move forward with a third season of the beloved cult series. Deadline reports the reboot of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is canceled after the series host, Jonah Ray Rodrigues, confirmed the news on Twitter.
In recent years, Netflix has become harsher when canceling shows. The streaming service garnered an early reputation for “saving” fan favorite series that got the ax on cable. MSTK3 definitely filled that quota, originally airing on Comedy Central and SyFy from 1998 to 1999. In fact, the series was so popular that it managed to earn 5.7 million dollars on Kickstarter in a campaign to bring it back.
However, as Jonah Ray Rodrigues joked in his tweet, the show now joins a myriad of other favorites that Netflix canceled. It’s become harder to grow attached to the streaming shows because Netflix doesn’t seem to have much of a vested interest in letting many series go past their third season.
As it was revealed with the tough negotiations around One Day at a Time and the cancellation of Santa Clarita Diet, the service doesn’t earn money from syndicated rights and has zero interest in selling off the streaming rights to allow someone else to save their shows.
Ray Rodrigues also thanked fans and the series creator, Joel Hodgson, for the time he got to spend on the show in another tweet.
