Netflix’s Altered Carbon welcomes back Will Yun Lee for season two
Netflix has announced that original Takeshi Kovacs Will Yun Lee is set to return in season two of Altered Carbon.
Season two of the hit Netflix series Altered Carbon is underway and it has been announced that Will Yun Lee is returning to the show. Lee played the original Takeshi Kovacs with Joel Kinnaman playing the future version of the character sleeved in a new body. Season two sees Anthony Mackie take over the Takeshi Kovacs role with an all-new cast and story. While Lee’s part in season two has not been announced, presumably he will return as Takeshi Kovacs in flashbacks to his past life.
Altered Carbon is a science fiction series set in a distant future where people can download their consciousness into new bodies called “sleeves.” While this creates the possibility that people could live forever, technology also creates new issues based on economic and social classes. The ultra-rich have access to cloning technology to make unlimited backups or to exclusive technological and biological upgrades, while the poor often have to make do with whatever body governmental services can offer them.
The technology also causes ethical and religious rifts in society between those who embrace the technology and those who believe it is a mortal sin. The future of Altered Carbon is dark and gritty in a style very reminiscent of films like Blade Runner, with the gap between the rich and poor becoming unthinkably wide and technology creating new ways to widen it further.
Will Yun Lee just finished filming the third season of The Good Doctor as Dr. Alex Park and has also appeared on shows like Hawaii Five-o, Rampage, and San Andreas. He will be a voice in the upcoming Sony animated feature Wish Dragon alongside Jackie Chan and John Cho. While season two of Altered Carbon does not yet have a release date, filming wrapped in mid-2019. An early 2020 release is likely.
