Could Darth Maul be headed to The Mandalorian in season 2?

In a world as expansive as Star Wars, it’s hard to think that any nod to the movies is done just for a throwaway moment. The Mandalorian just wrapped this season but already fans are looking to see what could happen in season 2. However, there was a pivotal moment that may have hinted at the return of a former character.

Warning: Spoilers for The Mandalorian season 1 finale below!

One of, if not the, big bad of the series, Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), is revealed to have the Darksaber. The animated Star Wars shows, Clone Wars and Rebels, revealed that the Darksaber actually belonged to Darth Maul after he stole it. Originally, it was created Tarre Vizsla, a Jedi and the first Mandalorian to become one. When Maul seized control of Mandalore during the Clone Wars, he took the black saber and would eventually begin to use it.

However, he wasn’t the last person in possession of the Darksaber. Bo-Katan Kryze, the new leader of Mandalore according to Rebels, eventually received the Darksaber. While it seems like no one ever truly dies in the Star Wars universe and that Darth Maul could return, it seems more likely The Mandalorian would explore how Moff Gideon came into possession of the saber.

The wildly popular series won’t return to Disney+ until sometime in the Fall of 2020 but undoubtedly fans will be on the lookout to see if either Sam Witwer or Ray Park arrive to set.
