Michelle Williams won the Golden Globe for her work on Fosse/Verdon, and she used her acceptance speech on a very important topic — women’s rights.

Michelle Williams pulled out a Golden Globes upset, and she used her time on the stage to not only thank her co-stars and production team but to voice a bigger message — women’s rights.

It’s no secret that women are treated vastly different than men in Hollywood, especially when it comes to salaries. According to Vanity Affair, Williams shared a deeply personal experience that opened the entertainment world to the huge pay discrepancy between All the Money in the World costar Mark Wahlberg and herself, which she said “paralyzed” her.

So in some respects, if Williams did take home the Golden Globe, at least some of her speech was going to go to highlighting how women should be treated on the same playing field as men. We knew this because her character on Fosse/Verfon, the late Gwen Verdon, was itself a glowing personification to the inequality women face and gender politics as a whole.

But I don’t think anyone either in the audience or watching at home would realize just how deep and powerful Williams’ speech would go.

She used her speech to not only bring to light the fight for equal pay, but also the right for women to have a choice when it comes to abortion. Near the end of her speech, she spoke to the 18-and-up crowd urging them to make their voices heard at the ballot box this year.

“When it is time to vote, please do so in your own self-interest,” she said, highlighting that men have been doing this for years. Then came the kicker:

“But don’t forget, we are the largest voting body in this country. Let’s make it look more like us.”

Words that should never be taken lightly, especially in this day and age.
