Nine Perfect Strangers: Melissa McCarthy joins cast of Hulu series
Melissa McCarthy joins Nicole Kidman in the cast for Hulu and David E. Kelley’s Nine Perfect Strangers.
Melissa McCarthy has joined the cast of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers. McCarthy will star alongside Nicole Kidman in the David E. Kelley series based on the best-selling novel by Lianne Moriarty. McCarthy most recently executive produced and recurred as herself on two seasons of the TV Land comedy Nobodies. Kidman has previously appeared in the HBO series adaptation of Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, also created by David E. Kelley. McCarthy and Kidman will both executive produce alongside Kelley.
Nine Perfect Strangers is set at a boutique health and wellness resort run by Kidman’s Masha, who will lead nine perfect strangers on a journey toward mind and body renewal. Nine strangers will meet at the resort as they join a ten-day retreat to change their lives and get on the path to better living. McCarthy will play Francis, one of the nine strangers. No other cast members have been revealed yet, but with names like Kidman, McCarthy, and Kelley on board we can expect the project to attract some talented people.
Kelley will co-write the series with John Henry Butterworth and Samantha Strauss and act as co-showrunner with Butterworth. Kidman will executive produce through her Blossom Films. Like Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers is a story of surface realities and facades with a dark twist at its center, coupled with some darkly ironic commentary.
Kidman and Kelley obviously have an affinity for these kinds of stories and for Moriarty’s work specifically. Big Little Lies also attracted names like Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep, while David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, Goliath) is also a potential draw for big-name actors. I think we can look forward to the assembly of an impressive cast. I personally have my fingers crossed for James Spader. But then again, I always do.
Nine Perfect Strangers is expected to debut on Hulu sometime in 2021.
