Hulu picks up Nicole Kidman series Nine Perfect Strangers, Kate McKinnon starrer The Dropout

Hulu has ordered two new series with major stars attached: Nine Perfect Strangers, starring Nicole Kidman, and The Dropout, starring Kate McKinnon.

The streaming service announced Nine Perfect Strangers, an adaptation of the latest book from Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty, was given a straight-to-series order. In addition, Hulu officially confirmed that The Dropout received a limited-series order.

Nicole Kidman will star in Nine Perfect Strangers as Masha, a woman who works at a wellness resort where the nine stressed city residents of the title go to heal and positively transform their lives. Masha’s on a mission to reinvigorate these nine strangers, but they have no idea what’s in store for them.

The series is slated for a late 2020 premiere on Hulu. It will be written and showrun by David E. Kelley and John Henry Butterworth. The pair also executive produce alongside Kidman and others.

The Dropout tells the story of Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, from her rise as a self-made billionaire to her fall from grace. Kate McKinnon will star as Holmes and executive produce. The team behind the ABC News podcast on which the series is based will also serve as executive producers. No word yet on a release date or episode count for the limited series.

This is Kidman’s second series based on Moriarity’s writing. Big Little Lies on HBO was a big success for her as an actor and an executive producer. Kidman’s also re-teaming with Big Little Lies creator and writer David E. Kelley for Nine Perfect Strangers, so perhaps they will capture some of the same magic.

More and more Kidman is taking control of her own destiny by producing the shows she stars in. If Big Little Lies and her other upcoming series, The Undoing, are any indication, Nine Perfect Strangers will also be an interesting exploration of the lives people lead.

McKinnon seems to be making similar moves by ushering The Dropout to the small screen. In addition to her Emmy-winning work on Saturday Night Live, McKinnon has appeared in several movies. The Dropout will be a dramatic role for McKinnon, showing another side of her vast range.
