Awkwafina is Nora from Queens has been renewed for a second season ahead of its series premiere. Plus, Awkwafina addresses her Oscar snub.

Per a report from Deadline, Awkwafina is Nora from Queens has been renewed for a second season ahead of its series premiere next Wednesday, January 22. The news came from a panel the Television Critics Association of America’s Winter Press Tour. Awkwafina was on the panel promoting the show with co-stars BD Wong (Mr. Robot), Bowen Yang (SNL), Lori Tan Chinn (Orange is the New Black), executive producers Lucia Aniello (Broad City), Karey Dornetto (Portlandia), and executive producer/writer Teresa Hsiao (Black Monday).

Comedy Central dropped a trailer for Awkwafina is Nora from Queens back in December. You can watch that here. The trailer currently has 2.9 million views on Comedy Central’s YouTube channel. It’s safe to say that a lot of people are interested in the show. That’s due in large part to the rising star of Awkwafina.

The show is based on Awkwafina’s real-life experiences growing up in Queens filtered through the character of Nora Lin. In a separate Deadline report from the Winter TCA’s, Awkwafina is quoted as saying that she tried to play the most real version of herself that she could. She didn’t want to make something that had been made many times before. Awkwafina just wants to inspire kids to be themselves.

Part of what inspires kids to be themselves is representation. You don’t have to model yourself after some cultureless, cookie-cutter version of yourself that is self-effacing while being self-deprecating. It’s healthy for kids, and adults for that matter, to see people who are like them in as many different versions of the world as possible. It really does instill a belief that anything is possible.

Awkwafina has already played a big role in representation and inclusion in Hollywood. Her break-out role came as the scene-stealing Peik Lin Goh in Crazy Rich Asians. She’s also had fun supporting roles in Ocean’s 8 and Jumanji: The Next Level. Awkwafina became the first Asian-American woman to win a Golden Globe Award for best actress for her performance in The Farewell.

Many people, me included, were upset that she was not nominated for an Oscar, as well. She was asked about her Oscar snub at the TCA panel. Per the Deadline report, Awkwafina gracefully said that there were some text message chains between the cast, but the actors who were nominated earned them with their performances.
