Arrow concluded this week with a sentimental finale that bid farewell to the hero who started the Arrowverse. But will a new hero rise from the ashes? Spoilers for the finale.

Following the events of ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’, Oliver Queen sacrificed his life to create a new multiverse, and in the bargain, he also resurrected several supporting characters and worlds. One of the worlds revealed to belong to the Arrowverse now includes Oa, home of the Green Lantern Corps. And now that Arrow has concluded, it seems the first Green Lantern has been teased as well. Spoilers ahead!

In the final scenes of Arrow, David Ramsey’s John Diggle is seen packing up his home along with his wife Lyla Michaels (Audrey Marie Anderson) and their children. Out of nowhere, Dig is struck by a falling meteor. When Dig investigates the alien object, we see him open a box that shines a green light in his face. Is it the fabled Green Lantern ring, come to find a worthy hero on Earth? The showrunners leave us with this cryptic tease about Dig’s post-show journey, something that they’ve been planning for over a year now.

"“That was something that we’ve been working our way towards for a good long time now. I think for maybe about a year, year-and-a-half we’ve known that this was a moment we’re going to be able to do, and it made sense to do it in the finale because my attitude is that even though the show ends, as long as the characters are alive the characters continue on. One of the things we wanted to do with the finale was give you a sense as to what their post-show trajectories would be. And certainly, Diggle’s is probably the most intriguing.”"

Speculation has been rife for several years now that John Diggle is destined to become a Green Lantern. The most obvious nod was during the ‘Elseworlds’ crossover when Earth-90’s Barry Allen commented that Dig wasn’t wearing his ring. In season seven, it was revealed that John’s father’s surname was Stewart – had they not been estranged, Dig’s name would have been John Stewart, the name of the first African-American DC Comics superhero. Stewart has been a beloved Green Lantern for several years.

With Arrow creator Greg Berlanti also creating a Green Lantern Corps series on HBO Max, many have wondered if Ramsey’s Dig will be headlining the show as Green Lantern. The character certainly deserves to lead a show on his own, why not with a brand new mantle, and on a completely different platform.

Are you excited for John Diggle to become a Green Lantern? Would you like to see him headline a show of his own?
