I Am Not Okay With This – Feb 26

For fans of Stranger Things or coming of age dramedies like Sex Education, I Am Not Okay With This follows an awkward young woman as she navigates all the usual challenges of young adulthood while discovering her own budding superpowers. The series is said to have a similar tone to Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World, which makes sense considering the similarly long titled I Am Not Okay With This is adapted from a graphic novel by the same author.

IT’s Sophia Lillis plays the lead character Syndey, which is reason enough to watch it, and is joined by Wyatt Oleff (also from IT), Sofia Bryant (The Good Wife), Kathleen Rose Perkins (You’re the Worst), Aidan Wojtak-Hissong (The Mission), and Richard Ellis (Veronica Mars). I love the kind of adorable awkwardness seen in the trailer, especially Oleff’s cheerful energy versus Lillis’s subdued bemusement. As he drives up to her in his beat-up car, he is undaunted by the slow roll of the car window as he opens it to talk to her. It took me ten seconds to fall in love with both of them.

This Japanese language series from director and photographer Mika Ninagawa chronicles the lives of two women as their lives intersect and affect each other. One is a famed photographer who has reached a point in her life where she wants to have a baby before it’s too late and the other is a struggling model who suddenly finds popularity when the photographer tweets a photo of her.

The series examines the changing priorities of life, the fickle nature of fame in a digital age, and how our self-worth is often determined by our followers and likes on social media. It’s a hard lesson to learn sometimes that we shouldn’t allow the opinion of strangers to affect our happiness or self-confidence, particularly the petty and capricious opinions of strangers online. The series looks vibrant, colorful, glamorous, and perfectly in keeping with the aesthetic for which Ninagawa is known in her photography.
