Amazon Prime has released the first trailer and key art for the upcoming sci-fi series Tales from the Loop.

We finally get our first look at the weird, wonderful, and whimsical world of Amazon Prime’s Tales from the Loop as they unveil the first trailer and key art for the upcoming series. The series is written and created by Nathaniel Halpern (Legion) and is based on the artwork of Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, who also designed the key art. Stålenhag’s work is quite distinctive and typically inserts incongruous futuristic elements into Swedish countryside environments.

The series is based on a narrative collection of Stålenhag’s work, also called Tales from the Loop, and tells the stories of a town and it’s various residents who live above a machine called “The Loop.” The Loop was built to “unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe,” and if the trailer and key art are any indication, this town is filled with scientific marvels and supernatural phenomena.

And while the happenings in this town are mysterious and frightening, they are also wonderful. There is a sense of wide-eyed curiosity to the whole community. A young girl just as contentedly catches drops of water from melting icicles in her mouth as she does interact with gigantic robotic creatures. It’s Jonathan Pryce’s town scientist’s enviable job to prove the impossible every day. The townspeople are full of life, love, and discovery – not just in matters of scientific impossibilities, but in the simple, everyday experiences of life.

The science fiction genre is often the most effective when utilized in a way that explores the human condition, telling universally relatable stories through individual experience. Tales from the Loop looks like it’s more than just sci-fi fluff and different from another vision of dystopian horror. It looks like a celebration of life, discovery, and diversity and it looks wonderfully enriching and positive, not to mention visually stunning and aesthetically pleasing. I’m all in on this one.

Tales from the Loop premieres on Amazon Prime April 3 after the world premiere at SXSW on March 16.
