Superstore: America Ferrera exiting hit comedy after five seasons
America Ferrera, star, executive producer and director of NBC’s hit comedy Superstore, is leaving the series after its current fifth season.
It’s been a rough weekend for Superstore fans. America Ferrera, who’s starred as beloved Cloud 9 employee Amy Sosa and executive produced the hit series for the past five years, announced Friday that she will be leaving after the season finale in April.
In a statement, Ferrera did not go into detail about her decision to exit, beyond wanting to start “the next chapter for my family and career,” but called her time on the show “some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career” and praised “my beloved Superstore family.”
"“I’m so grateful to my partners at NBC and Universal Television for the support and belief they have always placed in the show, and I’m most thankful to the brilliant Justin Spitzer for creating the funny, smart and relevant world of ‘Superstore’ and inviting me to be a part of it. As I start the next chapter for my family and career, I wish only the best, and much continued success, to my beloved Superstore family.”"
Created by Justin Spitzer, Superstore premiered on NBC in 2015, marking Ferrera’s highly-anticipated return to network television after headlining Ugly Betty on ABC from 2006 to 2010. Over the course of five seasons, Ferrera’s Amy has worked her way up the Cloud 9 ladder from associate to floor supervisor to assistant manager to store manager. In addition to starring and executive producing, Ferrera also directed four episodes.
Superstore will wrap its current season on April 16, and it was renewed for a sixth season in early February.
