Feel Good: Season 1 – March 19

This poignant, feel-good dramedy comes from the mind of Canadian stand-up comedian Mae Martin. The series follows Martin, playing herself, as she balances navigating a relationship with a woman who has never dated a woman before and the trials of battling addiction. In addition to all this, she has to balance her rising career in comedy and living as an ex-patriot in London. Based on the trailer, the series looks exactly what is implied by the title, with all the quirkiness and awkwardness that can be expected from a realistic and personal comedy like this. It looks sweet, funny, relatable, and honest.

Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker: Limited Series – March 20

This series is based on the life and times of black hair care pioneer and business mogul Madam C.J. Walker. In her time she was like the Oprah of hair care, considered the wealthiest African-American businesswoman at the time of her death in 1919. She formulated her own line of specialty African-American hair care products, selling them door-to-door and teaching women of color how to groom and style their hair in a time when the demographic was largely ignored.

And Madam C.J. Walker knew from her own experience with hair loss due to harsh chemicals and generic care products how important proper hair care and grooming really was. I don’t know anything about African-American hair care, but I do know that it’s a specialized process. The limited series stars Octavia Spencer as Madam Walker herself, alongside Blair Underwood, Tiffany Haddish, Garrett Morris, and Bill Bellamy.
