Bojack Horseman season 6, episode 15 recap: The View from Halfway Down
By Ariba Bhuvad
A trippy dream sequence reunites Bojack Horseman with dead characters from the show’s (and his) past forcing him to look back at his life.
Bojack Horseman got trippy AF in the series’ penultimate episode, and it was all indicative of one thing–his death. The episode is basically a deep dive into Bojack’s psyche as it starts with him in a mansion with all the dead characters from the series–his parents, Sarah Lynn, Herb. Oh, and Zach Braff is there as well, for some reason. Not sure why, but just go with it.
It’s all very jarring because while in this dream sequence (or whatever you want to call it), Bojack is very much aware that he has fallen into his pool and is about to die. But he can’t wake himself up and is stuck in this state with people of his past. Does he seek forgiveness? Does he want to apologize? It’s an assortment of everything, to be honest.
An interesting thing to take note of is that no matter what dialogue is taking place, it’s all a result of Bojack’s thoughts. He is the one sorting through all his feelings and to an extent, he is doing this through the people he is seeing in the dream.
Needless to say, all the conversations, the strange circus-like performance, and eventually facing a giant white void are all to make Bojack Horseman realize he does want to live. Unfortunately, it’s a bit too late for that considering his actual body is drowning in the pool.
One of the last things Bojack does is call the only person he can think of in the moment–Diane. She’s not real, of course, but it gives the guy some sense of comfort. And at least this version of Diane doesn’t hate his guts.
A dying Bojack’s heart seems to give out as the scene cuts to black, but don’t worry–you can hear the heart monitor pick back up. He’s alive, but what life holds for him is yet to be seen, in the series finale.
