In shocking news, Batwoman star Ruby Rose announced that she is leaving the show. The character will be recast for the next season.

The Arrowverse show Batwoman only just concluded its first season, and it has now lost its lead actor. TVLine reports that Kate Kane actor Ruby Rose has announced that she is exiting the show. No details have been provided as to why Rose made the decision, but the split appears to be amicable, on paper at least. The studios behind the show have revealed that they are committed to Batwoman continuing on and will recast the lead ahead of the second season.

Ruby Rose’s casting as the Scarlet Knight was controversial to some, but she made history as the first LGBTQ actor to lead a solo show in the Arrowverse. Since her arrival in the ‘Elseworlds’ crossover, Rose’s Kate Kane has been an arresting presence.

Batwoman, which debuted in fall 2019, has garnered plenty of fans especially because the show embraces its queer characters. In the statement released by studio executives, they assure viewers that the iconic character will be recast with an actor who is part of the LGBTQ community.

The first season of Batwoman ended prematurely as the final episodes were left incomplete because of the shut down in production.

If shooting for these episodes was already completed, then one can assume that either Rose’s scenes will be reshot with the new lead, or the show will go in a completely new direction.

Will Batwoman be the same without Ruby Rose? Recasting characters is always a difficult task, be it for casting directors or viewers. The Arrowverse hasn’t often changed actors in roles, though there have been a few instances in the past.

Caity Lotz stepped in to play Sara Lance in the second season of Arrow and has now become a fan favourite. Supergirl’s mother Alura was recast with Erica Durance, as an homage to her Smallville days. General Sam Lane will be played by Dylan Walsh in the upcoming Superman & Lois show, despite being played by Glenn Morshower for the majority of the first season of Supergirl.

Batwoman ended with a shocking cliffhanger, but this news still gives fans hope that the protector of Gotham will rise again in January 2021.
