2. Pretending to Be Things You’re Not

The gang on It’s Always Sunny is always pretending to be people they’re not, and this episode ought to remind people of similar instances, both past and more recent. Dee (Kaitlin Olson) consistently pretends to be an actress, developing chronically unfunny characters rooted in stereotypes (deeply confused cultural appropriation).

Dennis (Glenn Howerton) fancies himself as a “5-star man” although his personality is definitely less than zero. Then, of course, you have Dee’s fake activism in “The Gang Solves Global Warming” (Season 14, Ep. 7), where she uses social media to offer her own commentary on her non-existent activism. The characters most often come across as culturally unaware white people screaming ‘I’m not racist’ as they do much to suggest otherwise.

Mac has also consistently pretended to be something he’s not. In season 2 episode “Charlie Wants an Abortion,” Mac pretends to be an anti-abortion activist, so he can get with an anti-abortion protester (Autumn Reeser). In this episode, Mac purports to show how he is not gay while engaging in stereotypical homoerotic behavior (oiling up men’s bodies in the gym). It’s a hugely funny It’s Always Sunny moment while apparently commenting on the oddity of denial.
