Stateless Episode 2: How did Sofie end up with Cam?

In the previous episode of the Netflix Series Stateless, we met 3 characters set in different places, Cam, Sofie, and Ameer. But at the end of episode 1, we see Sofie arrive at the immigration camp that Cam works at, only she says her name is Eva.

We see Sofie in a bunk bed at the camp and she looks rather confused. She goes outside to see where she is. She watches the kids play and she sees Cam.

Cam is talking to another man about a movie and then helps the kids with their deflated soccer ball.

Cam notices that Sofie looks out of place but does not go over to her. Sofie walks to another woman and asks about the immigration process.

Sofie puts on a fake accent and says that she does not want to get into Australia, but rather be deported back to Germany. Could this be where Eva is from?

We then go back in time to when Sofie was in the water. Her sister and parents have her and are trying to take away her lease. They want her to go somewhere for treatment, but Sofie loses it.

We are back at the immigration camp. A helicopter flies over and people are on the roof of the camp holding up signs. The higher-ups need to send someone, Clare Kowitz, to help ease tensions in the immigration camp.

Sofie finally goes over the Cam and asks him how she can get back to Germany. He tells her that he can’t make that happen.

Sofie then flashes back again. She is asking someone for help to get out of the facility her parents put her in. He helps her to escape.

Margot goes to the facility and asks questions. The doctors kind of push back and say that perhaps she is running from something. We are looking at you Margot.

We then see Ameer. He has made it to Australia. He is able to sit down and complete an immigration interview. He tells the interviewer that he has been separated from his family.

Clare Kowitz arrives at the immigration camp. Cam is working at the security checkpoint. Clare then meets with Brian Ashworth, who helps to run the camp.

He starts to show her around the woman’s compound. He leaves her in the middle of the square and everyone bombards her with their cases. Brian then pulls her away to help with the people on the roof.

She uses a translator to help her to meet their requests. When they can’t come to an agreement, Clare attempts to go up to them, but they have razors on their necks ready to commit suicide if she goes up.

A news helicopter comes around and stops her from getting to the top. The men hold up their signs to the news crew in the helicopter.

Clare is back in her apartment watching the news. They are covering the story from the immigration camp.

We then go back to the immigration camp and see all of the men praying. Sofie is sitting in her cell and an immigration officer comes in. He offers her clothing and leaves.

She is in her bathroom and starts to hear voices from her past in her head. Again she can’t take it and walks out of her room and into the courtyard, but she has nowhere to go.

We then see Ameer on a bus. He is being taken to the same immigration camp. We haven’t seen his family here, but hopefully, he will find them.

Stateless: How does Sofie become Eva?

We then see Sofie again flashing back to a night out in a club. We see her meet a girl named Eva. Could this be how Sofie got her new name?

We then see Sofie looking through Eva’s belongings and she takes her passport. Eva is from Germany. Things are starting to make more sense.

In the morning, Ameer runs over to the women’s side of the camp. He asks them about his wife and daughters. They haven’t seen them. But, he does find Farid. Farid tells him that there are camps like this all over Australia.

Clare goes into Brian’s office and demands to stop air traffic over the camp. Brian tells her to make a phone call. This can help defuse the situation on the roof.

We then see Sofie taking to immigration before she was put into the camp. The whole time she is trying to get deported. Which now makes sense. She wants to start a new life, as Eva, in Germany.

At the camp, Sofie takes someone’s clothes. When she is confronted, Sofie rips the shirt off in the middle of the yard.

This makes the men go wild. A little too wild. The guards have to cuff a man and take him outside. Where he is beaten. This does not sit well with Cam or us for that matter.

Clare again goes back to Brian to discuss the conditions of the camp. She wants to add more recreational activity, but he won’t because the equipment is dangerous.

Clare then gets a phone call that someone from Ameer’s family is being brought to him. It is his older daughter. He asks about his wife and younger daughter. He finds out that they both drowned.

Clare runs to try to tell him this information before the daughter can, but she is too late.

Sofie walks over to a woman planting in the garden. The woman asks Sofie for seeds. She declines because she is thinking she will be deported soon.

The camp is starting to get to Clare and Cam. Cam is forced to take the swings that the little children enjoyed down and Clare is tired of people dying on their way to Australia.

The problem only gets worse when Clare sees the beating by the guards on the news.

Can Clare and Cam make a difference in the immigration camp? Will Sofie actually get deported as Eva? Will Ameer and his daughter get to live in Australia?
