Elle Fanning to lead a new true crime series: Who will she play?

Elle Fanning to play Michelle Carter in new true crime series for Hulu.

According to a new report from Variety, Elle Fanning is set to star in a new true crime series for Hulu based on the controversial suicide texting case involving Michelle Carter. The series will be called The Girl From Plainville and Fanning will portray  Carter.

For those unfamiliar, Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter in 2017 after she reportedly encouraged her boyfriend to commit suicide via text three years before her indictment. The series itself will be based around an Esquire article of the same name written by Jesse Barron.

The series will be produced by Universal Content Productions (UCP) who were also behind Hulu’s other acclaimed true crime series The Act, which garnered the streaming service multiple Emmy Award nominations for its stars Joey King and Patricia Arquette. The first season revolved around the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard.

Elle Fanning already has one successful series at Hulu with The Great, so her latest venture keeps her within the streaming family. It appears the actress is enjoying her time on television. In recent years, she has primarily stuck with film projects, but this marks a change of pace for her.

Show Snob also previously reported that UCP was working on another true crime adaptation revolving around murderess Candy Montgomery, who will be played by Elisabeth Moss. The series does not yet have a network or streaming service attached.

When will Elle Fanning’s new series premiere?

I doubt we’ll see The Girl From Plainville debut on Hulu until at least late 2021 at the earliest. Considering the ongoing pandemic and the television production shutdowns, it is hard to say when the series will go into development, especially if it has not been written yet.
