By Mads Lennon
This Is Us Season 5 will premiere at the end of October.
NBC has announced its upcoming fall 2020 television schedule, and there is a premiere date for This Is Us Season 5! According to Today, the Pearson family drama will return on November 10.
Even better for fans of the show, the Season 5 premiere will be a two-hour affair!
9/24 UPDATE: According to Deadline, NBC has moved up the This Is Us Season 5 premiere date by two weeks! The two-hour season premiere will now debut on Oct. 27! Production has officially started on the new season.
Interestingly, NBC’s announcement seems potentially premature, as of August 16, there was no news as to when This Is Us Season 5 would resume production. Normally, filming would have started in July, but the pandemic threw a wrench in those plans as it has with every other new and returning show.

The opening hours of the Emmy Award-winning series will focus on timely topics like the Black Lives Matter movement and the coronavirus pandemic. As Entertainment Weekly previously reported, showrunner Dan Fogelman intends to “attack” the pandemic “head on.”
Fogelman’s announcement was met by mixed reactions from fans, many of whom are not thrilled by the prospect of reliving the past six months through their favorite television shows.
Like This Is Us, other shows, including The Resident, The Good Doctor, and Grey’s Anatomy, will be writing the coronavirus into their upcoming season storylines.
While some fans are curious to see how these dramas tackle the pandemic, others feel television should be a form of escapism and are not interested in doom and gloom storytelling. Still, it’s hard to see how these dramas, many of which often tackle topical subjects, would completely bypass something that has affected all of us the way the pandemic has.
“I felt like, considering everything that’s going on in our country, we have an opportunity and almost a responsibility — without getting into the politics of it all — to capture what this is … a very unusual, landmark moment in time,” Fogelman told NPR.
Which Season 4 storylines will carry over to This Is Us Season 5?
Aside from new storylines, fans can anticipate seeing many of the plots from Season 4 carry over into the new season. The last time we left off with the Pearson family, Kevin was grappling with the realization that he would soon become a father to not just one child, but two, as Madison revealed she was pregnant with twins.
Kevin and Kate are also dealing with potentially becoming parents to an adopted daughter; a question left unanswered as of the Season 4 finale.
Something else the family will also have to deal with this season? Rebecca’s failing health as we recently learned she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Rather than attending a clinical trial in St. Louis, she would rather spend her remaining time with her family, a decision that has caused a rift between brothers Kevin and Randall.
