What will the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot be about?

The upcoming Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot, which is slated to air on Peacock TV, will be a “one-hour dramatic analogue of the 90’s sitcom,”  according to TVLine.

Simply titled Bel-Air, Will Smith made the announcement on Tuesday that the series would be picked up to series. It sounds like another actor will be cast as Will, however, as the actual Will Smith will serve as an executive producer on the series.

Following the original premise of Will making the difficult transition to a mansion in Bel-Air from the streets of West Philadelphia, this new version will provide a more in-depth look at the internalized conflicts, emotions, and biases, likely echoing real-world situations. It will be able to tackle problems with more depth than a sitcom allowed while still providing plenty of nods to the original.

Funnily enough, the idea for Bel-Air was conceived after someone made a parody of the sitcom, imagining it as a dramatic series instead of the comedy show we all know and love. The parody went viral, and thus the idea for the new show was conceived.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot: Will there be a second season?

Peacock TV is devoted to this project, as demonstrated by the fact they’ve already ordered two seasons of the series. So yes, there will be a second season of Bel-Air! It’s very rare that a new series get picked up for two seasons straight off the bat, so that means the streaming service, and NBCUniversal at large was very impressed with the show’s pitch.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot: Who will star?

No casting announcements have been made yet, but HBO Max has also recently ordered an unscripted reunion special similar to their upcoming Friends reunion.  The special is anticipated to have a Thanksgiving release and will many of the show’s original stars come together to discuss the show and its generational impact.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot: When will it premiere?

It is doubtful that we’ll see Bel-Air air anytime soon. With the pandemic and the recent announcement, it’ll take a few months for the series to get underway with writing and production. I’m guessing we’ll have to wait until fall 2021 at the earliest, although it’s possible it could arrive earlier than that if we’re lucky.
