Batwoman Season 2: New suit in the works & additional updates
By Louis Skye
Batwoman Season 2 is reworking its superhero suit and changing dynamics, as revealed in a panel discussion between cast and crew during DC FanDome.
Batwoman Season 2 has only recently started shooting but we’ve got some exciting updates for fans from the DC FanDome panel.
The panel spent a significant amount of time introducing the new Batwoman, Javicia Leslie, who will be playing Ryan Wilder, a character created specifically for the show.
While talking about the new entrant in the show, executive producer and showrunner Caroline Dries also shared some insights about the direction of the story and the vision that Leslie and Dries have for Wilder’s Batwoman.

One of those visions is to update the Batwoman suit to reflect the person wearing it. Dries spoke passionately about how much Batwoman coming out as a lesbian to Gotham meant for the direction of the show and the fans.
That same philosophy will be applied to Ryan Wilder, whose identity as a Black woman in a troubled world will be mirrored in a superhero silhouette that highlights her natural, textured hair.
Though Wilder will be introduced in the opening episode — following Kate Kane’s disappearance— the character’s journey as Gotham’s new superhero will not be smooth. All of which will make for an entertaining and enthralling Batwoman Season 2.
Batwoman Season 2: What do we know so far?
According to Dries, there will be two huge stories driving Batwoman Season 2–Kate Kane going missing, and Ryan Wilder’s journey to becoming Batwoman.
The characters will be trying to not only find Kate but also to determine what her situation is. Neither viewers nor the characters will know whether Kate is alive or dead, whether she was captured or is on the run. The characters will have their own theories and perspectives on Kate’s disappearance which will lead to a great deal of tension and drama.
As for Ryan Wilder, Dries describes her as a ‘statistic of injustice from the moment she was born’. And that has become Wilder’s battle—she has been fighting against the unjust system all her life, a mission she will continue to honor as Batwoman.
According to Leslie, Wilder will be representative of the communities in Gotham that have been overlooked—many of whom, she pointed out, could be seen at Mary Hamilton-Kane’s (Nicole Kang) underground clinic in Season 1.
In Batwoman Season 2, Wilder will be torn between her two worlds—she wants to help the people she knows need help because she is attached to them, but the villains that Batwoman faces also need to be taken down. As Leslie said, Wilder will be the person who “kicks a bad guys’ ass” and then goes to feed a cat in an alley or help an orphan girl find a place to stay.
Kate’s stepsister Mary will be taking Kate’s disappearance very hard—understandably, having lost her mother in Season 1. But she will find a way to bond with Wilder because they are both doing what they can for people who have nobody else to turn to.
Kate Kane’s ex-partner, Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy), who was Batwoman’s ally, will be seen to be more understanding of why Batwoman’s identity has to be kept secret—with newer threats in Gotham, she will want the hero to stay masked for her own safety. But Moore is also going to have a lot on her plate in the upcoming season with her ex having gone missing.
The primary antagonist of Season 1, Alice (Rachel Skarsten), is going to be very “peeved” because her intricate plans have been derailed—her aim was to kill Kate Kane, her twin sister, but with Kate missing, Alice can’t kill her.
Of course, Alice will have other things to worry about—a new villain in Gotham. Safiyah, who had been mentioned in Season one as someone Alice was afraid of, will be terrorizing the city in Batwoman Season 2.
Without Kate, there are going to be some interesting relationship dynamics next season. Kate had been a buffer between Mary and Alice—unsurprisingly, seeing as Alice murdered Mary’s mother right in front of her. Without Kate, her sisters may become even more antagonistic.
For Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson), the genius behind Team-Batwoman, losing Kate will be a blow. He will still be dealing with the tragedy of his father’s death, and the revelations that the man accused of the crime didn’t do it.
Find a way to trust a new Batwoman will be a challenge for Fox. As will his other relationships with the cast, because again, Kate was his connection to Mary, Alice, and Sophie.
Plenty of changes are coming in Batwoman Season 2, but the possibilities for more interesting relationships are also on the way, which is exciting for fans.
