‘Chambers,’ ‘Glitch,’ & the 8 most underrated scary shows on Netflix for Halloween season

2. Scary shows on Netflix: Bates Motel
Bates Motel is a psychological horror drama and a modern prequel to the classic 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film, Psycho. It follows Norman and his mother, Norma Bates, before the events of the film, starring Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga in the leading roles. Despite airing for five seasons and mostly being an acclaimed show that earned a huge cult following, Bates Motel barely managed to break into the major awards circuit.
I blame the Emmy Award’s distaste for horror (unless Ryan Murphy‘s name is attached). Farmiga certainly deserved an Emmy for her superb performance throughout. She did garner one nod in 2013 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, but that was it.
The first season of the series begins with Norma and Norman buying a motel shortly after Norman’s father dies. Not long after starting their new life, the mother-son duo has to hide a body and cover up a murder.
1. Scary shows on Netflix: Penny Dreadful
As Penny Dreadful is one of my favorite shows, I will take almost any excuse to write about it and/or recommend it. I don’t mean Penny Dreadful: City of Angels either, which hardly even deserves to share a title since it doesn’t have any real relation to the original three-season series starring Eva Green. The title itself refers to a real “penny dreadfuls,” a type of lurid 19th-century British fiction that often contains taboo and over-the-top subject matter.
Penny Dreadful follows original and public domain characters from 19th-century British and Irish Gothic fiction. You’ll get to see Dracula, Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and his famed creature, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and many more representations of classic literary figures.
