Batwoman Season 2: Javicia Leslie’s New Suit Unveiled
By Louis Skye
Batwoman Season 2 is giving fans a new supersuit. We’ve got the first sneak peek at the new suit and what it means for the protagonist.
Since Javicia Leslie was announced as the new Batwoman for Batwoman Season 2, fans have been waiting to see her new supersuit. And now we finally have our first look at the costume, reports TVLine.
The suit has been designed by costume designer Maya Mani, and created by Ocean Drive Leather, with a wig by Janice Workman. The gauntlets and boots are noticeably different, as is the wig, which includes red highlights but isn’t completely red like the one seen in Season 1.
Following Ruby Rose’s departure as the titular character, The CW announced that Leslie would be taking on the red-caped Gotham superhero. Leslie will not be playing Kate Kane—her character, Ryan Wilder, has been created for the show, and will be joining Team-Batwoman to protect Gotham.
While fans will have to wait till 2021 to see Leslie’s Ryan Wilder/ Batwoman in action, the character will be making her comic debut in Batgirl #50.
Though she isn’t featured on the cover, Wilder will be appearing in the inside pages of the comic and will presumably become a mainline character in the DC Comics universe in the following months.
And with Batwoman Season 2 already in production in Vancouver, Canada, it won’t be long before fans get to see the new Batwoman on their screens.
Batwoman Season 2: What Does Ryan Wilder Mean to Fans?
According to showrunner Caroline Dries, Batwoman Season 2 will be focusing on Kate Kane’s disappearance, with Wilder helping in the search for Kane, while protecting Gotham City against new threats.
We can expect that both Batgirl #50 and the first few episodes of Batwoman Season 2 will likely focus on the early days of Wilder becoming Batwoman. The CW has already shared shots of Leslie in Kate Kane’s Batwoman suit and the red hair.
But the new suit, while similar in design, has done away with the red wig, allowing for Wilder’s natural hair to shine. Leslie had been adamant about Batwoman having a silhouette that would identify her as a Black woman—making her relatable to the people she is representing.
Leslie had this to say about the suit: “I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman—it’s her style, her swag, and her moment! It was an honor to be able to collaborate with Caroline [Dries] and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”
With the recent Black Lives Matter protests, a spotlight has been shone on the lack of diversity in entertainment and the treatment of Black stories in the industry.
Having Leslie don an iconic character—who has been white for her duration in the comics world—is a step forward for entertainment. And Leslie’s addition to the show also led to Maya Houston joining the writers’ room, bringing in more diversity. There is still much work to be done but Batwoman Season 2 is going in the right direction.
