Gugu Mbatha-Raw to headline the upcoming Apple TV Plus thriller Surface.
In some exciting casting news, we’ve learned from Deadline that Loki star Gugu Mbatha-Raw will lead a new psychological thriller from Apple TV Plus, Veronica West and Hello Sunshine called Surface. Mbatha-Raw already has a connection to Apple TV Plus, previously appearing on their hit series The Morning Show.
It’s also exciting to learn that she’s going to be working with West, who previously served as the co-creator and executive producer of the short-lived Hulu series High Fidelity. Additionally, Hello Sunshine is Reese Witherspoon’s production company. Witherspoon herself will executive produce alongside West and fellow Hello Sunshine producer Lauren Neustadter. It seems like Mbatha-Raw and Witherspoon have forged a good working relationship since appearing together on The Morning Show. They also both previously appeared in Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time.

Currently, the series is set to being production in 2021. Unsurprisingly, Surface has landed a straight-to-series order. It sounds like it should be a hit for the streaming service.
The bad news is that details are incredibly sparse. Apple has yet to reveal the plot or even the logline for the series.
We know the series will be divided into eight parts written by West, whose previous writing credits include GCB, State of Affairs and Brothers & Sisters. She will also serve as a co-executive producer of Showtime’s upcoming extension/reboot of serial killer drama Dexter. Mbatha-Raw will also co-executive produce.
Overall, Apple TV Plus seems to be eager to continue their work with Hello Sunshine, as the company also produces Octavia Spencer starrer Truth Be Told (which recently cast Kate Hudson in a lead role for its second season) and an upcoming country music talent show called My Kind of Country.
